Synexus supports vaccines trials with dedicated team
According to statistics from the World Health Organisation (WHO) an estimated 2.1 million people around the world died in 2002 of diseases preventable by widely used vaccines. This toll included 1.4 million children under the age of five. Among these childhood deaths, over 500 000 were caused by measles; nearly 400 000 by Hib; nearly 300 000 by pertussis; and 180 000 by neonatal tetanus. The startling statistics mean that vaccine research is an area of considerable importance and in recognition of this Synexus has created a specialist vaccines team designed to better support pharma and biotech companies with research into this area.

Eli Lilly seeks to raise $750m to share research costs
Eli Lilly is seeking to raise $750m through three funds that will share drug development costs, and potential benefits, with venture capitalists and external researchers. The high cost of drug development is well documented, particularly when linked with failure rates. This scheme marks a move towards pharma opting to find new ways of funding drug development. It is an interesting concept which may, in the future, mean drug development is not limited by a company’s own resources. Eli Lilly is the first pharma to put this concept into such extensive practice and could represent an interesting new way of doing things. It could be argued, however, that drug development will, when using this model, be more focussed on ROI. But isn’t that already the case?
